Why Take Voice Lessons: Although everyone has the ability to speak and sing, it is important to learn how to use your voice in a healthy way. By taking lessons, you will learn to have good posture, breathe for singing, open your vocal tract, improve your tone, expand your range and grow in confidence, among many other things! You will learn music from a variety of genres from musical theater to classical to pop and expand your understanding of and ability to perform in various styles.
Recommended Age to Start: Children of all ages can and should sing and the earlier they learn healthy vocal technique, the better. Voice lessons are appropriate for motivated children who are eager to learn and practice solo repertoire. I recommend starting private voice instruction in 6th grade or higher. I also teach many adults. It’s never too late to pursue something you love!
Time Commitment: Students are encouraged to practice 4-5 times a week for 15-30 minutes each day depending on the level of repertoire they are studying. As students progress, they will need to spend more time practicing to cover all of the skills and repertoire they are learning.
Repertoire: I will encourage you to sing music from a variety of genres and challenge you with music that will help you grow. I always try to tailor repertoire to your interests while simultaneously introducing you to something new.
Length of Lessons: I offer 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons depending on student age and ability.
A Note On My Teaching Philosophy: A few years ago, I read Walter Isaacson’s biography of Leonardo da Vinci. What struck me most was da Vinci’s relentless pursuit of scientific understanding as a means of elevating his art to its most expressive and beautiful form. (Did you now that elusive Mona Lisa smile emerged from his careful study of facial muscles and nerves?!) In my fifteen years as a voice teacher, I have discovered that this same application of art and science forms the foundation of truly beautiful singing. I aim to communicate complex anatomical and physiological concepts in accessible ways to individual students in tandem with bringing out the artistry and individuality of each singer. As my students have engaged with this material, it has had a transformative effect on their overall sound, vocal freedom and confidence. I am excited to share this same knowledge with you on your singing journey!
